Artist Statement
I make art to motivate and inspire. I want the people in my community to fall in love with their ancestral ties. When I paint although I do have a plan of what I will incorporate, my paintings transform on their own. I take a surrealistic approach and let my fantasy wonder into the realm of dream and fantasy. My paintings are vibrant and I like to include aspects of the four elements; water, earth, wind, and fire to bring balance. I love learning about Mexican history and showcasing my indigenous pride. My love for Santa Barbara and it’s ocean also bleeds into my art. Water is life, and when I’m able to include it into my paintings it overflows with a sense of closeness and identity.
My art grazes the contrasting ideas of life and death through the representation of the skull surrounded by water. I use symbolic imagery like fruit wrapped around by roots, showing how we are the product of those that came before us. I also constantly reference religious and cultural mythology to reflect my people’s faith and way of life. My art pieces encompass all parts of myself and within them I include my ever evolving identity. I hope my art inspires those that come across it and leads them to relax and move as loosely as my paint brush.
